Personality Crisis

So after running into some issues with a badly bitched Hydra-Glide adjustable rake triple tree I started pissing around with variations of mock-ups on the shovel project again. And although I think the damage done to the hydras-glide trees is salvageable, I'm now having a mid-build crisis and rethinking the bike, again. So many rad options available. So here's a few of the mocks that have existed from day one to current incarnations. Let me know what you think. Some of them are more resolved and others you'll have to use your imagination on the final look.

4 over 41mm tubes and a 3 degree rake.

Stock length and rake w/ flanders risers, z bars, and solo seat.

Same as above w/ 2 piece 2-up seat.

3 degree rake w/ banana wassell.

Same as above w narrowed fatbobs.

3 degree rake w/split tanks HamBone bars and 2-up

With the engine back in the frame I was able to get the clutch basket off without the special tool. The impact I have wasn't enough to get the nut off. Gotta love the big snipe!

Making great progress on this paint job. The pics make the tins look blue but there not there metallic purple with purple flake. Hopefully will be able to finish them tomorrow. Need to paint the lace panels then some detail air brushing and boobs are cool oh I mean bobs your uncle. But boobs are cool anyway.

Bernie McAvoy threw a little Holiday shin-dig last night that was titties! Bernie's Machine Works is a shangra-la of awesome. Knuck knuck knuck pan knuck pan pan rarities after rare'r-ity. Around these parts of the world it's not likely to see any HD stuff pre-cone shovel. So it's always a major treat to see Bernie's stash. But Bernie's Machine shop isn't just relics and restore's. Bernie's built some of the meanest modern chops in town too. With a little egging on we even got a blast from what is probably the loudest bike in Saskatoon. 124ci S&S. Bernie figure's he's got over 380 hours into it. Shit! Thanks, Bernie, for a great evening.

Also got the 21 all shiny, wrapped in rubber, bearings repacked and sealed, balanced and trued. Things are starting to take shape.

Winter Nights

When you live North of the 49th parallel (the 52nd to be exact) this day is a unique one being the longest night we see all year. On this Winter Solstice we will actually see more than 16hrs of darkness and with sunrise at 9:14 AM and sunset at 4:57 PM we will have only 7h 42m 49s of daylight with which to soak up the vitamin D needed. The good news is that from tomorrow on the days start getting longer again. Some say the lack of sunlight makes us a little weird during the winter months, but I say it's just fuel for creativity. Winter builds have always been a place to focus that pent up coookyness. Get out and enjoy the sunlight any way you can. Here's to longer days ahead.

Murder in the alley

After the gig last night I pulled the Murder Van around into the alley to pack up the gear and it just stopped driving. In gear, but no go, still running and revving, but just sitting there. I got out and found a giant pool of oil under the radiator where a hose had blown. Looking down the alley there was a trail of oil leading back to the street. Poor Murder Van looked as though it'd been shot through the guts and dragged it's bloody carcass into the alley where it slipped into unconsciousness from blood loss. Du Keeps gave me a tow home with his Chevy 4By.

Now, here's the thing. The loss of oil does not seem a likely cause of the tranny loss. I fixed up the busted hose clamp today and topped up the oil, but still no tranny action. Obviously. Checked the tranny fluid to find it was bone dry. Total coincidence? If the tranny fluid hadn't dried up at the exact same moment that the oil line burst, I'd have driven home with oil spilling out the whole way, probably causing the engine to seize or overheat and cause serious damage at least. So I'll be topping up the tranny tonight to see if that solves the gearbox issues, but I'm hoping I got my Christmas Miracle last night and not a Christmas Massacre. My shining star in the east, a dry gearbox.

UPDATE: The Murder Van is back on the road. If it wasn't for Dale being in the back for the winter I could'a stole like 5 kids tonight.

I've been making some progress on the bike. I fixed up both engine covers and got to have a look at the oil pump. Which turned out to be in good shape. I had to make a few mods to the tach drive housing because the set screw was compressed against the housing rather than through the housing. A little grinding and drilling and it fit properly again.

I spent quite a bit of time on the covers.

Looks a bit better eh!

I also had a look at the sump filter it has a big tear in it. Turns out to be a pretty common problem. It is the reason I kept finding metal shavings in my oil filter. An upgraded sump filter is available to solve it. So I will be snagging one of them.

Unexpected warm weather today allowed me a chance to test the charging system on the van. Turns out the alternator is fine. Battery was f'd and there's still a funny short somewhere causing the lights to pulse. Needs a little more testing this afternoon to trace the problem. Maybe regulator? But I did discover this little curiosity tucked way inside.

I wonder what wonderful tune it plays? traced the wires back to a switch on the dash, but nothin happens when you flip it. I'll maybe pull it out and hit it with a battery just to hear it sing. Also snuck my Honda into my wife's heated studio while she wasn't looking.

Heheh. Hopefully she'll let me store it there for the winter. Not enough room in the van for two bikes if I plan to do the magneto swap on DaLe in there over the winter.
