Damn drain plugs.

The new carb float valves and gas cap seal seem to have fixed the problem of fuel draining into the oilpan. This is how I tested it before putting the bike back together. I Thought it would be a good Idea since there didn't seem to be any way to remove the BS34's with out spliting them. It fired up real nice and seems to be running well so I must have done something right.
So now I am on to the mystery of why the kickstart doesn't return after a kick. But.... of course I get stumped by the simplest thing. Those giant frigin Drain plugs on the xs. I don't know why they need two, or why they have to be such enormous 27mm bolts. And why is it everytime I try to remove them, they are so friggin stuck. I can't really figure out a way to hoist the thing up so I can put an impact on them.
If you've run into this before, let me know how you worked it out. That is a fine lookin 650 though eh!

Successfull delivery

It was a beautiful day for ride and if not for the slight hangover it would have been perfect. Amazing how well you can think while riding. My meditation on the way up brought me to the answer for the goofy high idle. I used the kiss principle and was itching to fix it when I got to La Ronge. Be sure the bike is totally warmed up before you adjust the idle speed!
Chris was stoked to see the bike and got all giggly when I readjusted the carbs and had it running totally proper! So we took it down to the dock for a shoot, don't worry I've edited the gay man poses offered by Little!

They still have ice on the lake but it won't last long and the planes will be put in the water soon.

Sales consulting

Moto Kēno was busy this weekend and last. After getting the seller to put a chain on the bike to test ride it we found a couple of problems and were able to get the price down $500. The bike is real clean and handles excelently. The history of the bike is a little unsure as the seller thought it was an '81 but we've since found that the frame is a '78 and the engine an '80. After adjusting the clutch we've found that the stiffer springs are actually quite nice! Chris rode it for the first time yesterday and is super stoked to get it up to La Ronge so he can get some real time in the saddle!

He rode it for the first time and got his hands a little dirty. After the clutch adjustment we had to adjust the idle which is still giving us a bit of a headache as it bumps up to 3000 after being riden for a short while and will randomly go back down???? Any suggestions are welcome.

The next thing we checked out was the front brake as the disc and caliper were covered in grease it was not very strong but the more we rode it the better it got. So we pulled the caliper to inspect. Found out a couople of things. First the caliper is not leaking and it seems that the fork seals will need some replacing in the future and second the dust boot on the brake piston is a real pain in the ass to get back on!

It is a lot bigger than the seat and this causes the headache when tring to put the snap ring in place. We checked out my 650 to verify that we were not loosing it and yep it's just bigger. Strange but the trick was to put the snap ring opening at the top of the piston and work the seal in from there.

I've found that if I dedicate an entire day to the bike I can get a lot of shit done. So maybe Shane's 650 will start coming along faster now or at least faster than one set of carbs for an entire winter. Chris is happy and I'll be delivering the bike to him in little L.A. on the 17th with a flight back to saskatoon the next day. If any mules are interested in joining me on the way up it would be a sweet early season tour to take!!

Your thoughts please

Hello Mules,

I've got a good friend looking at an 81 XS650. He is probably coming down from La Ronge this weekend to check it out and I'm going to tag along since he hasn't riden all that much. Since my experience buying used vehicles has involved an engine rebuild shortly after the purchase about 43.5% of the time I thought I'd see if you guys had any advice on what we should be checking out and such when we go to look at it and also some opinions on the price as I think it may be a bit high though it does have some new paint on it. Anyhow here is the add let me know what you think. Oh yea and he wants me to ride it up to La Ronge for him..... sweet I hope it works out.

Kenny Roberts Style

Some time around '75 a guy named Kenny Roberts was winning #1 plates for Yamaha in the AMA Flat Tracks on a modified XS650. Me and Keno were talkin' about how sweet it'd be to show up at the ice track with a studded Flat Tracker XS. So here's some pics of Kenny for Keno.

There's a good Kenny Roberts Replica article on 650motorcycles.com from a '93 Cycle World publication Here too.

650 Spares

Ollie just dropped off another two boxes of XS/TX 650 parts from the farm including an entire top end. Unfortunately the parts I'm looking for are in the bottom end. Still. Nice to have something to look at for ref. Keno's looking to do some top end work on his '77 this winter. Here's a working model for ya.
