The Black Eyed Dog

Don't think I've posted anything of the finished Panhead since I got it done for Chop Meet. Here's a few pics. Still some tuning to do and a couple issues to resolve, but for my first complete motor assembly from the flywheels up and my first complete 4 speed transmission assembly I'm damn please with the results.

Pan-stance and tranny-sembly

This is it. The stance we've been seeking. Now all that's left is everything. Well almost everything. I did get the tranny assembled thanks to the supervising powers of Brian.

Over and Over

Ok its no sugarbear enterprises, but it's the biggest I've ever owned. Finished building the front wheel this evening and strapped it to the nearly ready 14" over RL. Love. all love.

VL victory

Brian got his lathe up and running and went to work on my VL making it suitable for the big twin neck on my wishbone frame. Stole the idea from a Love Cycles post from way back for the adapter. Amazing work. Thanks bud.

Bottom dollar

Got my bottom end bolted together last night thanks to Dirky Turkey. Thanks for the help man.

Make a wish(bone) foundation finally rewards my particular handicap

If you were to ask Jordan what he wants most in the world he would say, "a vintage molded wishbone frame and an extended VL springer to put my dog barf breakfast of a 1950 Panhead engine in." Well dreams really do come true.

Head werk

Picture of my Panheads in progress at Jason Parker's shop in TO. He's only got 2 shovels, a pan and 3 other sets of heads to do at the same time. Hahah. Can't wait...but will.

Pan Parts Update

Looks like I'm going to be building every part of this beast from the ground up. Assembling the motor and the tranny, lacing the wheels and rebuilding the star hubs, assembling a Linkert m74B carb, and then all the other stuff that I've done before like rebuilding a clutch, brakes, wiring, yaddy yaddy yadah. It's actually pretty awesome, because by the time it's all together I'm hoping to have my first stage brown belt in Mule Wizardry.

Here's where we're at:
The Tranny is inventoried and cataloged. Just a few pieces to find at the swap meet and it can all go together again.

The motor is waiting on a different sized thrush washer so I can set the flywheel endplay and finally button up the fly wheel assembly safely inside the cases and start working on the cam gear assembly.
The heads are still in Toronto with Jason Parker getting turned into something awesome. Oversized valves, new valve springs, guides and a few repairs should make these things pound as hard as any shovel out there. Matched with a set of 9:1 compression Wiseco pistons we should make some smoke.

The wheels still need to be laced and I've decided not to use the late panhead, early shovelhead mid-star hub and drum brake and run the other older starhub I have instead. Need to find an older style brake now, but I want to keep this thing as Pantastic as possible.

The linkert carb is really just a chrome body with the venturi half sticking out, so I'm hoping to find a donor with all the right parts I can strip off at the swap.

Panhead Project update

Thought I'd put a status update together for anyone following my Panhead Dreams.
I got the Cases back from Bernie yesterday who did a few adjustments here and there to make things tickity boo.

Welded up the timing plug hole, fixed up a weld on a broken engine mount and then machined the cases to match perfectly because the left case is a 1951and the right is a 1964. This brings us to the next challenge.

The next challenge is that right now THIS is my panhead engine. Ohhh my.

Now. The fact that one half of the bottom end is from 1951 and the other half is from 1964 actually causes a wealth of issues. They have a completely different shaft and bearing system. Fortunately, after a few hours of sloothing I've determined that whoever started putting this project together build the flywheel assembly specifically for this motor and everything from the right flywheel over is set up for the '64 case and everything from the left flywheel over is built for the '51. Phew.

I was laying out parts on the pizza box cataloging them by looking through two Panhead service manuals and a parts catalogue.

Tonight I'll go back to what I'm good at and start washing the dishes again. Yes Polishing turds! Once all the bearings are greased and everything is clean clean clean I'll be ready to try putting the halves back together. Unfortunately, the manuals say for a '51 engine you need to start by putting the right case on and for a '64 you need to start with the left case. Shit. Chicken Egg.

As for the top end, the heads are currently with Jason Parker in Toronto getting turned into something awesome!! I've got new Jugs and just need one or two little bits to have everything. It's time to put my money where my mouth is and dive in.

Panpanpanpan

Been collecting and collecting for the Pan and am getting really itchy to start putting it together. Bernie still has my cases so I might be building wheels and refreshing other bits before I get to the motor. All good I guess. I need to slow down and take my time, but panpanpanpanpanpan

True Blue

Funny how shit works sometimes. I never thought I'd ever get a Panhead project in my hands, but as of today I'm working with, albeit the muttiest damn pan on earth, but a Pan project nevertheless. Sold Dale at just the right time, made the right drunken pitch for Brian to sell me one of his 4 generator mills, something shiny dangled in front of his face, and whammo! Welcome home Panhead.

Seriously, though this would not have been made possible if my man Jessop hadn't made a fucking amazing package deal up for me. I'm drinkin' to you tonight, sir (I was drinkin' anyway).  You're true blue, mate. I won't forget it. Cheers!

Now what are we lookin at here? Good question. Here's the rundown. Let's start with the motor. Today I brought home a basket bottom end of a Panhead. Left case is a '51 and the right a '64 (hey I warned you it was a mutt). I've got the flywheels, cam side gears, etc. pretty much complete. Brian also threw in lifter blocks, pushrods, and a set of shovel jugs and pistons in case I can't wait and go to a PanShovel setup. Just looking for heads and rocker boxes yet.

The frame is a '58 Panhead frame I got from the Red Deer swap last year. Its Stretched in the down tubes and backbone just a bit and raked. It will remain a swinger with those little sprung strut things. I traded a 35mm front end for it. Habahaha. The forks are chromed 33's with 6" over tubes. These and the Juice drum brake on the 16" wheel from the first pic I got from Brian at the Chop Meet. Looking to transfer the Juice drum to a 19" Akront Shouldered Rim that's on it's way from outta town. The front wheel is a 19 Dunlop with a hallcraft mini drum. I'm hoping to get a 1.60 21" rim to lace the hub to. Tank is a fiberglass sporty. Might go for a frisco style narrowed sporty later on...{sneezing}HamBone-. So there we go. A long road ahead, but it's Jordan's Panhead.
