Los Chops c.c. 1951 LEAD SLED

An empty garage = car on the road!
I started this "chop" in 2010, and it feels so good to drive it down the road. All the late night and empty beer cans finally paid off.. this is basicaly a full mock up before paint. I plan to take it all part in the fall to do paint, chrome and interior. Until then I'm going to cruise it as much as I can ………...and try to stay out of jail

And speaking of Awesome Turds...

Okay, maybe it's just me and Billy, but big ol' chevy's make the best mules. And that greatness is only compounded by a turbo 350. and look at that cockpit!

For the love of God! Somebody buy this thing. Quick, DuKeeps, trade this guy for your XS750 or something.

Antiquated Mule Pilot Test

So the past couple days there's been this '76 DiscoRay, L82 (important 30hp distinction) parked at work.

And today I couldn't resist takin' a few snaps of it's antiquated glory.

Well someone musta seen me because when I got up to my office, Cheryl walks in and tosses me the keys. "Take your time.", she says. "It corners really nice with the gas on."

OooooKaaaayyyyy...

Comin off this ramp I looked in the rear view to see the po po tailing me. Oops. Honest officer I didn't know the car was in MPH. I thought 50 was a perfectly reasonable speed to exit the freeway.

Snell Approved

I used to work with this cat named Dave Snell. Dave's gotta have two of the sweetest rides in the province. This one, a '51 Fleetline Deluxe, was parked outside today. I'm in love. His other custom, a '32 ford with a Corvette engine is equally insane.

Mule throws a shoe

Heading out to Martensville last Monday, to help Hambone with his wiring, the Antiquated Mule threw a shoe. Engine shook (more) noisy and unbalanced. One cylinder not firing I think. Plugs had spark, wires were good... Time for the guru. Headed over to the Great Daryl P's for a proper diagnosis. Pulled a burnt rotor from the dist. and replaced it with one D had from V8 super stock. Nope. Still no cylinder #1. Compression test showed 0. Damn. Finger in the hole revealed sucking but no blow. Hmm. Pulled the valve cover to discover an intake valve had thrown a nut. Loose as a...well you know her. Tightened a new nut in place and Bobs yer uncle. Runs smother than I ever remember. What'll I do with all that extra power? Thanks Daryl!

Lunch treats

Went home for lunch to find this beauty parked accross from my house.
I'm pretty sure it's a '52 Advanced Design but I'm open to
interpretations. Love the pirate's chest in the the box.

Mule Variations

The Skull door lock caps came with the unit. Ben gottem at the Draggins rod and custom show a few years back.

I added power steering with the lady luck suicide knob. Only realized they were illegal after I installed it. Now I can't live without it. Sorry Johnny Law.

From Mule to Ass (is that better or just different?)

Bolt on body work. Antiquated Mule Contributor Du Keeps came up with this method of rat body work to get his El Camino to pass inspection in BC years ago. A little aluminum flashing and voila. Beautifully ratty body work. See previous posts for pic of the rusty ride.

Did a little angle grinding and painting to most areas on the body while I was at it, but it was still frickin' cold out and the paint was running a bit. Plan to do more Bondo work this summer.

The Mirror you see above is from a yamaha XS650, '74 vintage. I drilled a hole a third of the way up the hood and mounted it.

Pesky Vacuum Choke that needed replacing. Hot and cold the Chev ran fine, but the 10 minutes it took to warm up it ran like shit. Had to rev the sucker so high teh otherwise excellent gas mileage ;) was crap. Unfortunately in Saskatoon, everything is 10 minutes away which meant it always ran like crap. Took longer to locate the part than it did to replace it for sure. Finally got it ordered from Sargent's Auto Electric Ltd. Shipped from Edmonton it cost me $3.86. After setting the choke (bending shit) and setting the timing (pushing and pulling the distributor) she runs like a top. Could use a carb kit (one came with the car in the trunk).

The exhaust needed replacing front to back. Aside from waking the neighbors, which was normally reserved for motorcycle season, I was getting dizzy at long red lights. Didn't do anything fancy, just pieced together the cheapest straights and curves I could get and had the local muffler shop fab it into place. Kinda wish I'd gone for something that made the straight 6 make it's sludge growl a little more, but I'd promised the wife this wouldn't be another money pit and time sucker. See above for broken promises.

The Original Antiquated Mule

This '63 Biscayne was gifted to me by my Cousin and Antiquated Mule contributor Billy Sastard last January. Apart from the exhaust having just let loose, the whammy brakes, the vacuum choke not vacuuming and the rusted body dropping chunks of Chevy up my block, it was in pretty good shape. The heater worked great and in the middle of a Saskatchewan January with February still to come that was good enough. Sastard warned me the bisquick was an anitiquated mule and that I should not put a lot of time or money into her, but to lov'er for all her faults and driv'er into oblivion. Thanks Billy.
